Work Permit

State of Massachusetts work permit information

  1. In Massachusetts, all teens under 18 must obtain a Youth Employment Permit before starting a new job. Applicants aged 14–17 need a signed "Promise of Employment" from their employer, parental consent, and a doctor's signature (if 14–15) to obtain the permit, which is typically issued by school district offices.

2. Secure a Job Offer: Obtain a written promise of employment detailing duties and hours.

3. Complete the Application: available online at http://www.mass.gov/howto/how-to-get-a-work-permit or at the PACE Center located at 367 Ray St, Fall River, MA 02720. If you are a current Durfee student, please obtain a work permit application from the Guidance Office.

4. Obtain Signatures: Employer: Fills out the "Promise of Employment" section. Doctor: Required for 14- and 15-year-olds to certify physical fitness. Parent/Guardian: Provides signature of consent.

5. The student has to bring back the Promise of Employment packet and needs proof of age:

6. The student must be present to sign the Work Permit, and there is no charge for the permit.
